Title: Suggestion for backup policy Author: Stefan Klinger Date: Sun 2014-Oct-19 13:17:10 CEST I suggest the following naming convention for backups of a repository ${name}: `${name}.dump.bz2` — the compressed dump from `svnadmin dump`, to provide a long term backup of the entire repository. `${name}.repos.tar.bz2` — the packed snapshot for easy resurrection. `${name}.tar.bz2` — exported latest revision for easy access to final state of the project. `${name}.access` — copy of latest permissions in use. It should be possible to create these files with something like the following (warning: untested): # to avoid race conditions, make sure nobody has commit # permissions on the repository. # to backup `https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/foobar`: $ name=foobar $ svnadmin dump "/home/svn/dbis/repos/${name}" | bzip2 > "${name}.dump.bz2" $ chmod 440 "${name}.dump.bz2" $ ln -s "/home/svn/dbis/repos/${name}" "${name}.repos" $ tar -hc "${name}.repos" | bzip2 > "${name}.repos.tar.bz2" $ rm "${name}.repos" $ chmod 440 "${name}.repos.tar.bz2" $ svn export "https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/${name}" $ tar -c "${name}" | bzip2 > "${name}.tar.bz2" $ rm -rf "${name}" $ chmod 440 "${name}.tar.bz2" Alternatively, you may use the `freezeRepos` script.
